Community Service - Paying back the Community

Lothian and Borders CJA together with the Community Service Teams from each local authority in our area (City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian, Scottish Borders and West Lothian)have published their second Community Service newsletter 'Community Service Summer 2009' which gives more examples of the excellent work being done by offenders as part of their payback to the community.

Community Service is a direct alternative to prison for offenders appearing before the Sheriff and High Courts. The average length of Orders is 180 hours to be completed within a 12 month period. This is currently under review as part of the Government's Safer Scotland initiative.

Research shows that Community Service has a lower rate of re-offending than other Court punishments and makes a significant contribution in paying back the communities damaged by offending behaviour.
